Soothing Winter Skin and Lips

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, $14 at drugstore.com

It’s cold here in Massachusetts, as in much of the country.  So cold, and for so long, I might not raise an eyebrow should the White Witch sled up the drive proffering Turkish Delight.  This is the time of year when the weather stops being cute – read: holiday appropriate – and starts getting real.

In response, my skin erupts up in itchy, chappy scales with the ferocity of a barrel of flaming poison ivy.  After a few weeks of slathering with pure coconut oil, which made my skin smell but, sadly, not feel like the tropics, I went back to my long-loved CeraVe Moisturizing Cream.  The Cream, not the lotion.  This thick whipped concoction comes in a tub, and is devoid of any fragrance.  Nothing else combats my eczema as quickly as CeraVe except the prescription cortisone.  And when I use CeraVe, I only need the prescription cream for small stubborn areas.  Fewer hormonal steroids = Win.

A more recent fave is Neosporin’s Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy.

Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Remedy, $5 at drugstore.com

It promises to “restore visibly healthy lips” in three nights.  None of the usual suspects were working on my flaky, beyond chapped lips, including obsessive application of Aquaphor.  Two nights of slicking on this white cream before bed and I’m already back to normal.  I don’t know what to expect on the third morning (baby lips?) but regardless it’s won a place in my winter arsenal.
