Isn’t She Lovely?

Here she is, my Gary Fisher Simple City 3W, fully kitted out.

A local bike shop brought in the Simple City for an in-person comparison to the Trek Allant, which was the closest alternative in stock. The Allant is appealing at $540, but for $60 more the Simple City offers a whole lot of design bang for your buck: subtler decals, double-legged kick stand, and my personal favorite, internally routed cables for a sleeker look.

The ice-blue (it’s not as vibrantly aqua as the photo) and cream combo is admittedly right up my alley. For more serious folk, the men’s style comes in black. It’s worth noting the Allant has seven speeds and the Simple City only three. I’ve found three to be sufficient for cruising around town.

Now for accessories!

Etsy wicker basket searches eventually turned up this vintage fishing number, via greatfindz. While it’s one of a kind, their shop is worth checking out for vintage home accessories. My next stop would have been Nantucket Bike Basket. Find one you like and then ask your local bike shop to order one for you (web orders are bulk only).

The back rack is standard chrome-finish purchased at the local shop. I wasn’t too finicky about the rack since the panniers cover it.  My safari-style panniers and many others are available at  Cycle Chic, an inspiring source of bike fashion with a London bent.

Cycle Chic carries the least-dorky helmet out there, the Bern Muse EPS.  Since Bern is an American snow boarding brand, there’s no need to incur UK shipping costs unless you can’t find a particular color elsewhere. I found a matte brown on Amazon that does the trick (see below).  Note that the hard hat version doesn’t offer the same level of protection as the EPS.

This bell from The Old Bicycle Company is the right scale for me (smallish), and the soft bring-bring alerts pedestrians without startling them.

Last but not least, a U-Lock small enough to fit in the basket or panniers.

Next up might be these Cateye lights for nighttime:

They pose aesthetic and practical questions, though.  Will the black be too stark, and will they get any use?  Given the encroaching cold, these will probably wait for spring’s return.
